An Analysis of Morning Commute Route Choice Patterns Using GPS Based Vehicle Activity Data
نویسندگان
چکیده
This paper examines the morning commute route choice behavior of 182 drivers, using disaggregated GPS-based activity data collected during a ten-day period. This paper attempts to describe how these commuters tend to behave in the real world. A binary logit model of morning commuters’ choice between using a single commute route and multiple routes was established, based upon the evidence of drivers’ varying valuations of a number of route and trip characteristics as well as the commuters’ sociodemographic characteristics. The research results of this paper indicate a strong relationship between the morning commute trip-chaining decision (single vs. multiple routes) and work schedule flexibility as well as commuters’ socio-demographic characteristics and commute route attributes. Understanding travelers’ route choice behavior can help in designing route choice algorithms that are based upon more realistic assumptions. Using GPS Data to Understand the Day-to-Day Dynamics of the Morning Commute Behavior
This paper examined the day-to-day variability of the journey-to-work trips, including the departure time, route choice, and trip chaining behavior, using GPS-based disaggregate morning commute data of 56 drivers during a one-week period. Data were collected from the ongoing instrumented vehicle projects in Atlanta sponsored by NHTSA and FHWA. The paper examines alternate measurements of the da...
متن کاملA portfolio theory of route choice
Although many individual route choice models have been proposed to incorporate travel time variability as a decision factor, they are typically still deterministic in the sense that the optimal strategy requires choosing one particular route that maximizes utility. In contrast, this study introduces an individual route choice model where choosing a portfolio of routes instead of a single route ...

Morning commute problem considering route choice, user heterogeneity and alternative system optima
This paper extends the bottleneck model to study congestion behavior of morning commute and its implications to transportation economics. The proposed model considers simultaneous route and departure time choices of heterogenous users who are distinguished by their valuation of travel time and punctual arrival. Moreover, two dynamic system optima are considered: one minimizes system cost in the...
متن کاملExploring Universal Patterns in Human Home-Work Commuting from Mobile Phone Data
Home-work commuting has always attracted significant research attention because of its impact on human mobility. One of the key assumptions in this domain of study is the universal uniformity of commute times. However, a true comparison of commute patterns has often been hindered by the intrinsic differences in data collection methods, which make observation from different countries potentially...
